Story:
A young journalist starts receiving troubling messages
on her cellular phone. When a young girl answers the
phone by accident, she seems to become possessed by
a malicious spirit. In the Korean thriller "Phone,"
a girl is threatened and finally killed by events involved
with telephone messages from a stranger of unknown source.
After the girl’s sudden death, Ji-won, a good
friend of hers working as a magazine reporter investigates
the case by using her mobile as a clue. He manages to
find out the number of the person who sent out the calls,
but to his surprise it is no longer in use…
Review: Ring Ring! I look on the caller ID
which lists 011-9984-6644. “Who is it?”
I listen for a couple seconds and without warning,
an unbearable screeching noise fills my head. I cup
my ears, screaming while I try to maintain my sanity.
Next thing I know….I’m dead.
Well not really, but that would have been the case
had I been in this terrifying movie. This movie can
only be compared to one movie. And that would be The
Ring. Phone had me gripping my friend’s arm
with my sweaty ass hands. From the first few minutes
of this movie, I knew I was in for a special treat.
I hadn’t heard of this movie before the day
I purchased this, but I’m glad I forked out
my hard-earned cash for this though. If you like good
horror movies that will knock your socks off and make
you wanna go crying to mommy, this is it. If you liked
Ring, this is your type of movie.
I can’t really say much about the movie, because
in doing so, I risk spoiling it for some of you. But
I will do into some detail about the movie though,
for the curious ones. Well… the movie starts
out with nothing going on…. And all of a sudden,
a girl gets a phone call from someone or some mysterious
entity. What fate befalls this girl? I’ll leave
the outcome to you to figure out. Next we are introduced
to the Phone. Yes, the phone. In a way, I like to
think of it as a character. Now, it doesn’t
walk around and talk or anything, but this little
sucker carries the movie in a way. If it weren’t
for this little white phone, this movie could’ve
been called “static” or something. But
anyway, back to the point, when that phone rings…
you just want to crawl under the sheets and wet your
bed. Not too much into the movie, we are introduced
to a little girl by the name of Young Ju. She’s
a really cute girl. She’s the epitome of a cute
girl I’d say. She’s like the Asian Shirley
Temple! Just the way she acts, smiling, fidgeting
around like she’s lost or something is just
plain cute! But then, in an ill-fated moment, she
answers a phone call. She starts to scream at the
top of her lungs as her eyes roll up to show the whites.
You just know that something’s wrong with her
and that something bad is going to happen later in
the movie.
When Young Ju gets possessed, it’s not like
Exorcist where she starts rotting and changing her
voice. Instead we are given an entirely different
girl. A truly evil with an even more sinister look
on her face. She looks like she’s going to kill
someone! I was very surprised that this little girl
could pull off such an evil role. And I must say,
she handles the role perfectly! I don’t know
how she does it, but she is good! If I could give
this girl an award for best acting, I would in a heartbeat.
You guys have to see this girl’s talent, I will
go as far as to say that her acting surpasses most
of the other characters’. It’s interesting
to see her lose her cool and go berserk while the
mysterious entity’s got her in it’s possession.
The plot is very interesting to say the least. It
has enough to keep you interested from beginning to
end. There are some flat moments though where the
story feels a little convoluted and just drags a bit.
There are also those moments that I think should have
just been left out such as the side plot about a stalker.
However, that aspect does have some importance within
the story, but the movie could’ve done well
without it. The movie follows somewhat of a rhythmic
pattern to it. It goes something like this: slow,
scary, slow, scary, slow, scary, scary, slow, scary.
Phone knows when to let up on the horror and give
some explanation to the story and when to let the
viewer have a breather from some of the truly terrifying
segments. Those of you expecting a pure 100% horror
slasher flick movie, you wont find it here. However,
those of you wanting a great horror movie with a well
thought out story with superb acting, Phone will most
likely please you.
Compared to the Ring, this movie does not revolve
around the curse, but it circulates more around the
characters and their motivations for doing what they
do, and why things are. The story doesn’t focus
on the phone too much…. Granted, the phone IS
a major plot element, but it’s not the main
focus of the movie. It’s more about the entity
behind the phone and what fate befell them. You get
to know that being and the pains and motivations it
goes through. You find out all the ties between the
main characters, the phone, and this individual. I
can’t say anymore, it’ll just ruin the
movie for everyone.
This movie had a real impact on me after watching
it. For several days, I was terrified of picking up
my phone or any other phone. On the nights after,
I'd keep a lookout while I lay in my bed just to see
if there were any undead roaming around the foot of
my bed. If a movie has a lasting impression like that,
it’s got to be good! And in this case, Phone
IS that good! Check it out if you can muster up the
courage to scare yourself!

DVD
[ NTSC, All Region
] :
Though the sleeve lists the DVD as Region 3, it is
actually Region ALL. Starmax/Bear has provided us
with a very excellent DVD of a great movie. Phone
is presented in a very clear and fresh looking anamorphic
1.85:1 widescreen. I can’t see it any other
way. For the audio formats, a very excellent DTS 5.1
ES surround track is provided that will fill the room
with all the creepy noises and will definitely scare
the living daylights out of you. Also provided is
an equally impressive Dolby Digital 5.1 EX Surround
track. Special features include a commentary by director
and actress, Deleted scenes, a short making of “Phone,”
Interviews, Trailers, TV spots, Behind the Scenes,
Epilogue, and Production Notes. And one last thing,
there is a short segment on a “Real Story”
of the Phone too that sounds pretty interesting. Sadly,
none of the extras are English subtitled.
