Review: Generally people think that Asian movies are all about kung fu and martial art or just recently horror, but the biggest market in Asia are probably romance movies, specially TV plays and Soap Operas. Japan and South-Korea TV plays are very famous in all over Asia and it is not a surprise to see that so many of this genre is easily available everywhere. Over The Rainbow is another attempt on this particular ground and unfortunately this movie doesn’t have anything special to offer that other movie before had.

The concept behind the story is rather interesting as it tries to exploit the subject of the lost and search of a loved one and amnesia. But it doesn’t take too much time before the viewer figure all the subtle mystery and is left with almost not enigma at all for the rest of the movie. If it was director’s Ahn Jin-woo intention to make a story so easy or even maybe dumb, it was a very bad plan right from the beginning as a good mystery plot would have made the movie much better.

At least the movie is not confusing at all and uses a lot of flashback to explain to us in detail the past life of our main characters. The whole general story is not bad and contains a few good moments here and there that will probably make you remember your high school days, but don’t expect to be amazed by a clever or ingenious script.

Probably one of the most important aspects of drama movies is of course the performance of the actors, if there’s no feeling, there’s no interest. Something that worked well was the chemistry between the two main actors; in fact all the actors were pretty good and transmitted a warm feeling to the viewers. The characters themselves were pretty ordinary and not very original but since their play was good, it is probably the reason why the viewer will watch the whole movie.

The good chemistry of the main actors really helped the movie and makes most of the tender moments enjoyable. Over The Rainbow is no tears breaker or laughable comedy but tries to do a soft mix of both genres. The final result is a simple romance movie that might get the attention during a viewing but will be soon forgotten by the viewers after.

There’s more than just kung fu from Asian cinema and Asian drama are a thing not to miss if you like Asian movies, but Over The Rainbow might not be the appropriate title impress or surprise people as it is a very close to any type of traditional drama.
