Story: Cha, also called Mantis, is a woman living the life of a gangster and an important one at that. She is the second man of one of the biggest local crime organization, who has over 50 men working under her orders. One day, her gangster life changes suddenly when she finds her elder lost sister, which is dying from cancer. Mantis is ready to do anything to make these last days of her dying sister the best she can have and one of her wishes is to see Mantis get married and settle down. Without losing time she asks her men to find her a husband. They come up with Kang Soo-iL, a single 35 year old man who is quite unsure of himself, not really at ease in the presence of women and who's already flunked more than 30 blind dates.

This rushed marriage will not go without any trouble as Cha will try to hide her gangster life from her new husband and sister. As for Kang Soo-iL, this marriage will not be really the relationship he expected to have with his new wife as he will find her behavior a little strange and inappropriate for a normal women. But meanwhile, White Shark, the biggest competitor of Mantis gangster group, will try using this moment to expand their territories while Mantis is busy to fit in her new life.

Review: Probably one of the most talked about South Korean movie of 2001. Since the trailer appeared over the internet and also especially since the rights of the movie were purchased by Miramax to do an American remake, My Wife is a Gangster has not passed without being noticed by the Asian films lovers. Before watching the movie I had some great expectations, especially after seeing the trailer, and as the usual I was a little disappointed by the final result. Not because the movie was bad but because it was different to what I was expecting. The trailer and stills that I saw really advertised the movie as an action movie with some comedy thrown in it. But the movie is really more a comedy with a very small dose of action; in fact the trailer shows the only two real fights of the whole movie.

The concept, which I think was original, given a really good premise to the movie and was very well exploited since there are no boring moments during the whole viewing. The story is very enjoyable, even if there is no big unexpected turnover, it still had some couple of surprises and a general well thought out plot that makes it far from a brainless comedy. The most interesting part of the story is the development of the relationship of the newly married couple. Cha trying to hide her gangster manners and appear has feminine as she can, but since she always acted as a tomboy, the result is quite funny to watch. As for her husband, who only asked for a normal relationship and minimal respect from his new wife, he's just at the beginning of his problems.

The story also deals a lot about the problem that Cha has with the other crime organization called the White Shark. This part of the story is mostly a sub plot but will become a full part of the movie when the time comes. The story is a good mix of comical situations, couple of short action scenes and also some serious dramatic moments, all this very well put together as each of the genres support the other one, without leaving the spectators attention.

The movie focuses mostly on the relationship of Cha and Kang and the story really takes the time to build a great development between these two characters. The two actors were very convincing and formed a great duo on screen. They supported the performance of each other instead of leaving the opposite actor in the background. Kang was played by Park Sang-Myeon (Foul King, Humanist), it was the first time for me to see this actor playing a major role in a movie and his performance was excellent. His comical behaviors, facial expression and tones of voice were very funny and he really becomes an attaching character to a point that you will feel very pity for him when you realize in what he got himself into. As for the gangster wife, she was played by Shin Eun-Gyeong, which I think really gave an incredible performance. Always cold and serious as she could be and feeling completely uncomfortable in her new status of a wife, she was just perfect for the role.

Since there's also a couple of interesting sub plot, the movie also takes the time to introduce and develop other great characters that can't pass without being noticed, such as the personal right hand man of Cha. There's not a lot of background on him but still, his performance was great and his character design was very cool, wait till you see the tattoo! There's was also the comical duo of Romeo and his new recruit, which I consider the best surprise of the movie. They really put themselves in stupid situation, specially the recruit, which will make you laugh for sure.

As I said, the movie is more of a comedy than a real action flick so don't wait for a lot of incredible stunts and fight because it's only a very small part of the movie. The movie focuses more on the humoristic situations of the new couple and also the stupid behavior of some of the gang members. Most of the jokes are surprisingly very funny but there's a lot of reference to Korean culture so expect to miss some jokes because of that. It might not be a good movie for an introduction to Korean cinema but fans of Asian comedies, especially Korean comedies, will no doubt be pleased by the humoristic aspect of the film.

As for the fight sequences, they were very stylish, well choreographed but sometime it was hard to really follow what was going on, specially in the first fight sequence. Just keep in mind that the action scenes are not really a strong point of the movie and more just a small surprise candy. But I can't hide the fact that I would have whished that there would be more of it. By the way, does someone know where we can buy that cool pair of deadly knife scissors?

I was very surprised when I have heard that Miramax bought the rights to the movie and were planning to do a remake. I told myself at this time, "Why bother, just release the damn movie over here with subs and that's all!" but now I know. There's just too much Korean cultural reference, mostly about marriage and the relationship of couples, to really export this movie over here and the average person will probably not understand and enjoy this movie as much as an Asian movie fan. But I really suggest this movie because it is simple a good movie with a lot of humor to please those who like Korean comedy.

UK Tartan DVD [ PAL, Region 2 ] :

It’s been a long time in coming since it was announced by Premier Asia, and you can’t help feeling that this release is a big disappointment. Originally announced as a 2-disc release, it’s instead been given a single disc only - with the only special feature (apart from the usual trailers for other releases) being an audio commentary with Bey Logan and Mike Leeder. On the commentary track itself the duo even discuss some of the special features that were being produced for the release - and we find sadly missing. As good as the commentary is - and as usual its well worth a listen - the lack of special features isn’t the only disappointing aspect of the disc. While the choice of soundtracks is good (there’s a Korean 5.1 mix, an English dubbed 5.1 mix and Korean DTS track) and the subtitles are fine, the films picture itself is the real downer. It’s been cropped. The Korean disc aspect ratio is 1.85:1, but this release gives us a slimmer 1.78:1, which is a real shame.

Korean DVD [
NTSC, All Region ] :

The packaging is labeled as region code 3 but the movie is in fact Free Region. Korea DVD standards are pretty high right now and this release is again another solid one. An excellent anamorphic wide screen transfer supported by a great DTS original Korean audio track, which really kicks in during the fight sequences. This release comes in a 2 DVD box set. The subtitles suffer from some bad typing errors from time to time but they are clear and the timing is also very good. The first DVD contains the movie with the trailer. The second DVD is packed with extras: Cast N` Crew info, Interviews, Making of, Outtakes and Promotion data. The entire extra are not subtitles but they are still interesting to watch one time. This is again another excellent Korean DVD release that I strongly suggest you to get if you want to watch this movie.
