Review: Skark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl is one hell of a piece of work to say the least. This is an extremely stylish movie, on the visual and dialogues aspect . This is not your regular movie and this has a lot of *cool* elements. This movie was based on a manga, its influence can be seen through out the movie. The story is also non conventional, the movie is more about a setting and characters dropped into that setting. The general story itself seems to go into circles with no real purpose to it, following this story is pretty easy, there is little or no confusion.

This movie has a rare collection of colorful characters that has yet to be seen in another movie. You have about 20 or so unique characters each one extremely different and well drawn. Most of these characters had a pretty cool style while others were plain bizarre. This movie placed a lot of focus on all of these characters and their interactions, there was a surprising amount non related dialog between the characters. Basically the gangsters just sitting around and talking about stuff not related to the story, often a lot of funny things are said. Even with the lack of any serious background or real development these characters are all well presented, if you dig deep enough you can possible find symbolism in each of these characters.

Before seeing this movie it looked and felt like it was going to be some action packed adventure, even the opening credits that show you the characters makes you expect something big. The movie is not as action packed as it appears to be, instead of giving the audience senseless violence they decided on more quality content. The movie may seem a bit slow but that's to give the proper focus on the characters and their interactions. The few action scenes in the movie are cool but not incredible, its more a matter of the little interesting details that happen. So don't go watching this movie expecting high action and you wont be disappointed.

The subtitles were good on this DVD and that is an important because you will have a lot of reading to do. There is a lot of dialogs but its not essential to the story its more extra enjoyable content. This is a movie with a lot of style, a movie that gives you ideas and inspires. Unfortunately due to the lack of senseless violence and action some people might find this movie a little boring. Watch this movie expecting something slow paced with very funny things happening during the story and you will end up with something really enjoyable. We recommend this movie to people who enjoy strange, pulpfictionesque and subculture movies.

DVD [ NTSC, Region 2 ] :

The picture was perfect! The anamorphic transfer is very sharp and clear. You have some minor compression problems during the darker scenes at the end of the movie, but except that there is no complaint. As for the sound you have a surround sound 5.1 and a very good DTS audio track. For the extras: Chapter selection, Teaser, Theatrical Trailer, 2 TV Trailers, NG footage, Introduction, Interviews and Production Notes. Unfortunately none of these extra have English subs, and that is a shame cause the interviews seem very interesting. The DVD might be a little expensive so we may suggest you to watch the movie on VCD first and if you really like it, then get the DVD.

DVD [ PAL, Region 2 ] REM version :

The German REM release of this Japanese movie features a wide screen LTB transfer (no 16X9), a Japanese DD2.0 and good English subtitles. The only problem with the image is that it seems too dark, it’s very obvious when you compare it to the Japanese version. The extras consist of a picture gallery, 2 trailers of the movie, extra trailers of: Audition, Dead Or Alive, Pornostar, Electric Dragon 80000V, Wild Zero and Visitor Q. The Japanese version is much more superior in every way, better image quality (16X9), DTS sound and better packaging. But the German release is cheaper, so if budget is matter for you, get the PAL German release.
