The Divine Weapon

Joseon’s top secret lay dormant for over 560 years A great battle with the inland continent begins 1448, the 30th year of Sejong’s reign. The Ming dynasty’s meddling into Joseon’s domestic affairs goes to extremes and Sejong secretly plans to develop Singijeon, a rocket weapon upgraded from Goryeo’s firearms technology. The Ming finds out and quickly dispatches assassins to attack the research lab, but CHOI Hae-san, the man in charge of the project, destroys himself along with the research materials to protect the weapon’s secret. His daughter Hong-li (HAN Eun-jung) barely escapes but loses the Chong-tong Records (Singijeon’s blueprints) to the Ming assassins.
“If this is perfected, it will change the face of war!”

As the Ming’s diplomatic pressure increases on Joseon for making the Singijeon, Sejong commands Chang-gang, the chief royal guard warrior, to take the only person with the potential to complete the Singijeon, Hong-li, safely to Sul-ju (JUNG Jae-young), a peddler. The son of the top engineer of Hwa-tong-do-gam (place for making gunpowder and firearms–or a weapons factory in today’s language) at the end of Goryeo dynasty, Sul-ju is an exceedingly intelligent man with the top martial art skills in Joseon. He rejects Joseon as a descendant of Goryeo migrants and lives as the head of a merchant gang. He refuses Chang-gang’s command to help construct the Singijeon, but in order to save his gang from a fight with rivals, he is forced to join Hong-li in seeing the Singijeon completed.
“If you do not destroy Singijeon, there is only one consequence! War!”

Desperate to understand the facts of Singijeon, the Ming sends an army disguised as a large envoy to intimidate Sejong and the court. Meanwhile, the Ming army sets out to find Sul-ju’s headquarters and completely destroy the slightest possibilities of developing Singijeon. After repeated failures in the project, Sul-ju risks his life to recover the Chong-tong Records for Hong-li. However, he starts to have second thoughts as his comrades are sacrificed in battles. At last, as they are moments away from the completion of Singijeon, the Ming and Yeo-jin alliance army of 100,000 heads for Eui-ju, Joseon. In order to stop the war, Sejong hands Hong-li and the Chong-tong Records to the Ming envoy and even Sul-ju is imprisoned by the court...
This is the detailed plot rundown on KIM Yoo-jin's upcoming The Devine Weapon which will have an promo screening at Cannes. The Devine Weapon has an allstar cast of Han Eun-jeong, Jae-yeong Jeong, and Heo Joon-ho. No official release date has been set yet, but new stills have been released today. Exclusive interview with Dave Boyle, the director of 'Big Dreams Little Tokyo'

Just found the poster online for White on rice, the sophmore effort from Dave Boyle the director of the charming little gem Big Dreams Little Tokyo. Last year, Mr. Boyle was kind enough to send me a copy of his first feature and even took time out of his busy schedule of shooting White on Rice to answer a few questions for me. Unfortuately I was too lazy to post them online until now (I am deeply sorry, Dave). Nonetheless, hope you all enjoy.
Everyone has a story about their love of film. What drew you personally to become a filmmaker?
When I was younger, I thought about becoming an illustrator or a novelist, but eventually I found that I really loved the storytelling methods of filmmaking. It all came from a desire to tell stories, I guess. My parents always exposed me to "great works of cinema" from a young age, which helped seal that desire. The novice acting in Big Dreams Little Tokyo is what gives the film its charm. How did you go about casting for the film? Did you always envision yourself in the lead? Had James Kyson Lee been cast in the hit show Heroes by the time you began shooting?
Casting myself was sort of an act of desperation, I must admit. It partially came from the fact that I didn't know any actors who spoke Japanese, and also because I was a new director and wasn't sure how to "direct" actors. Having at least one actor that I didn't have to talk to or coax a performance from made it a little less stressful for me. The last reason was purely financial. I was willing to act for free if I was working for me.
James hadn't yet been cast in "Heroes," I believe he was still in the audition process at that time. He came in to read for the part, and I thought his intensity would be hilarious in the role. He was a lot of fun to work with, a real people person, and I asked him to play one of the main roles in my new film "White on Rice".
Do you plan on stepping in from of the camera again?
No. Unless I bring back Boyd Wilson for some reason. That's about all I can do.
Your Japanese pronunciation is damn good. Did you watch any Japanese films to help learn the language? If so, what are some of your favorites from Japan?
I learned Japanese as a Mormon missionary in Australia, so I come from kind of a different background than most Japanese speakers. That being said, I have always been a fan of overseas cinema.
To prepare for the role, I tried to watch a lot of "Salaryman" comedies. I thought Boyd would probably have picked up alot of his mannerisms from Japanese movies and TV. Koji Yakusho was definitely an inspiration in many of his roles. I like directors Juzo Itami, Yasujiro Ozu and Yasuzo Masumura in particular. I have to admit that European comedies of the 50's and 60's (especially directors Francois Truffaut and Pietro Germi) were a huge influence on "Big Dreams."
Tell me about your new film White on Rice.
"White on Rice" is about a couple (played by Yuuki Nae and Mio Takada) who are struggling to prop up their hapless, recently divorced brother in law Hajime (Hiroshi Watanabe from "Letters from Iwo Jima") who is camped out in their house. Ramona (Lynn Chen from "Saving Face") comes to visit and Hajime immediately falls head over heels, but she is more interested in his co-worker Tim Kim (James Kyson Lee). I can't wait to start shooting. The cast we've gathered together is truly a remarkable bunch.
What have you learned from Big Dreams Little Tokyo, which will help you in the process of making White on Rice?
Innumberable things! Besides all of the technical aspects of moviemaking, I've really learned a lot about how to present my particular brand of humor to an audience. Hopefully, I'll get better with each film that I make.
For more info on Dave Boyle's first film Big Dreams Little Tokyo check out the official website. The DVD is currently scheduled for release on July 22nd and can be pre-ordered at Amazon now. As for White on Rice, look for it on the film festival circuit in the near future.

Just days after Criterion Collection announced their jump to the high definition format, now comes word that Kino International will soon make their introduction. First out of the gates in the fall is rumored to be Wong Kar Wai's Fallen Angels. Supplements have yet to be revealed, however, one would assume the Blu-Ray features would at the very least mirror that of their previous standard release.

Ekachai Uekrongtham's Upcoming The Coffin
| |
Theatrical Release
Posted on 05 08 08 by Brian
Before I jump into anything, I would like to thank Pusanisa at TIFA Company Ltd who sent us these new stills for Ekachai Uekrongtham's upcoming english horror pic The Coffin. Set to Premiere at this years Cannes, The Coffin's allstar cast consist of Karen Mok, Ananda Everingham, Andrew Lin, Napaka Nakpasit, and Aki Shibuya.
So what exactly is The Coffin about? Here is a little rundown provided by TIFA Company Ltd that will give you an idea of what to expect.
Death ritual for the living Ekachai came up with the idea for the film after hearing about the mass funeral for the living where thousands turned up at a North Eastern temple in Thailand to lie in coffins and go through the ritual.
Referred to in Thailand as "Non Loeng Sadorcro" which literally means Lie in Coffin, Rid of Bad Luck, this increasingly popular but controversial ritual involves participants lying in coffins while a group of monks perform death rites as if the participants are already dead. This is then followed by a chant of a new life.
Many participants had said they felt as if they were reborn after the ritual with bad karma buried behind them. But this death rite for the living is not without its detractors. Some brand it as an occult practice while others consider it a bad omen to lie in a coffin when one is still alive.
The Coffin, the English-language film tells a spine-chilling story about a man and a woman who are confronted by a series of paranormal and terrifying incidents after going through the bizarre death-before-dying ritual. Thrilling, mysterious and ultimately moving, it's also a tale about the beauty of life and death, living and dying.
